Some great legroom to be found in a 3-3-3 config
On my way to the antarctic cruise that never was (more on that in another post!) I got locked into a situation where there were no good award tickets for two people from the US to South America, given that it was high season and we had very specific dates we needed to fly. That meant buying an econ revenue fare, but fortunately we found a good deal on Expedia.com. This particular flight was the second of three legs down to Punta Arenas, and ended up being a last-minute equipment change to a LAN/LATAM 787-8 — a welcome change as it meant everyone on the plane had more space to spread out! To that end, check out my “turn down service” in the gallery below 🙂
The Rewards Card Points That Get You Here:
While this flight was not part of an award redemption, I do know that American and British Airways are two good ways to book these seats on LAN. The British Airways Visa Signature® Card, which as of the posting is offering a 50,000 Avios signup bonus (after spending $3k in the first 3 months of having the card) and a further 25,000 bonus after spending $10k in the first year. Citi now has three cobranded credit cards with American Airlines, and those are:
- the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®
- the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ Mastercard®
- and the Citi® / AAdvantage® Gold World Elite™ Mastercard®
How Was The Flight?
What’s awesome:
- totally sleepable economy rows if you can find an empty one (I did!)
- IFE screens are great even in the exit row, though positioning there can be awkward
- excellent service and friendly flight attendants
- outlets/USB at every seat
What’s not:
- exit row window is missing and the legroom is notably obstructed by the slide
- the last rows by the lavatories are likely to get bumped because they are very exposed
- I didn’t fly it, but the business class looks very open/exposed — another review in the future perhaps!
- limited recline with the bulkhead behind

The Bottom Line:
I would not hesitate to fly the LAN/LATAM 787 again, and would certainly try hard to redeem points to get into business class as their updated product looks far superior to their old business class. The cabin crew was great, the veggie meal was actually quite decent, and the seats/IFE were very good, and only in a 3-3-3 config, not a 3-4-3.
What else?
Did I miss anything? What’s your experience been like while flying on LAN/LATAM? Let us know in your comment below!
