Consistency is king
On the way home from the trip to Antarctica that never actually happened (on Quark Expeditions…), the only way to get North out of Punta Arenas was via Puerto Montt, so we decided to make it a stopover and check out this small port town. I don’t often stay at IHG properties (Intercontinental, Kimpton, Holiday Inn, etc), but on occasion I do hit an Intercon or Kimpton, and on road trips or in small towns like Puerto Montt I’ve come to appreciate the consistency of the Holiday Inn product.
What’s awesome:
- nice views, especially from balcony rooms on the upper floors
- the entire staff was pleasant and helpful
- free breakfast, per usual at Holiday Inns
- good pillow options (see gallery below)
What’s not:
- rooms on lower floors facing the water will have some amount of road noise
- hotel entry is awkward – right on a major street and attached to a mall
Getting Free Holiday Inn Nights via Points
If you’re looking to ramp up your IHG points and status, or move over to that program once the SPG program becomes part of Marriott, then you’ll want to take a hard look at the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card. As of November 2017, the signup bonus is at 60,000 bonus points (after spending $1k in the first 3 months of having the card), and it still offers IHG Rewards Club Platinum status and a 10% award redemption bonus to all cardmembers. Kind of a no-brainer if you’re an IHG member and/or will be staying at their properties frequently. Not too many cards offer automatic elite status, according to Credit Card Rewards.

The Bottom Line:
This Holiday Inn in Puerto Montt is a pretty standard offering from that IHG brand, which is what you want when you book one of these hotels; they’re basic but consistent, and offering free wifi and breakfast to all guests always feels like a status perk when I’m at a Holiday Inn (SPG and Hyatt have conditioned me!!).
