1. An open jaw ticket is a round trip ticket with at least three cities of arrival and departure. Example: JFK-LHR-IAD, with LHR being the stopover city, or LHR-JFK-EWR-LHR. These are booked when taking advantage of some award ticket bookings in which you are permitted to take an extended stopover in a city while still traveling on the same redemption, thus saving miles/points.
